INFORMATION RESOURCES
LIBRARIAN
Jerome Marcantel has been hired as Information Resources Librarian. This newly-created position requires a variety of technology-related skills to enhance library electronic resources, services, and web pages. He already has been highly involved in designing the Library's web presence in the new university portal. Jerome comes to McNeese most recently from Franciscan University of Steubenville (Ohio), and has a variety of experience in academic and special libraries.
The McNeese Library is now a full member of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, one of 36 in the state of Louisiana. The National Library of Medicine operates this network to provide libraries with medical information services, including outreach resources, continuing education opportunities, and the medical interlibrary loan system (Docline).
In the first two months, the Interlibrary Loan Office provided more than
320 journal articles, with sixty-five sent to hospital and medical
libraries in Louisiana. Copies were electronically sent to hospital
libraries in St. Petersburg, Russia and Minsk in Belarus. McNeese employees recently took part in the Start Walking at Work Day program, sponsored by the American Heart Association. First place on campus went to Frazar Friends, who compiled over 347 miles. Frazar
Friends was comprised of: Debbie finished third among all university employees with over 104 miles! Congratulations to all. The next American Heart Association's Walk for Life for Southwest Louisiana is scheduled for Saturday, November 8. Contact Joe McNeill for further details. LIBRARY RECEIVES CONSERVATION BOOKSHELF
Treasured objects and artifacts held by the McNeese Library will be
preserved for future generations with help from the
IMLS Connecting to
Collections Bookshelf, a core set of conservation books, DVDs, and online
resources donated by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS),
the primary source of federal funding for the nation's museums and
libraries.
The McNeese
Library is being
awarded this essential set of resources based on
an application describing the needs and plans for care of its collections.
The application was successfully submitted by Josh Finnell,
Reference
Librarian.
The
IMLS Bookshelf
focuses on collections typically found in history or art museums and in
libraries' special collections, with an added selection of texts for zoos,
aquaria, public gardens, and nature centers. It addresses such
topics as the philosophy and ethics of collecting, collections management
and planning, emergency preparedness, and
culturally specific conservation
needs.
The IMLS Bookshelf is a crucial component
of
Connecting to Collections: A Call to Action, a conservation initiative
that the institute launched in 2006. IMLS began the initiative in
response to a 2005
Heritage
Preservation study, which documented the dire state of the nation's
collections. The multi-faceted, multi-year initiative shines a
nationwide spotlight on the needs of America's collections, especially
those held by smaller institutions. Such institutions often lack the
human and financial resources necessary to adequately care for their
collections. McNeese State University Library has received several generous donations for its collections. Recent gifts have been received from Dr. Robert Forrest, Associate Professor of History, and Dr. Delma McLeod-Porter, Director of the Write to Excellence Center and Professor of English.
PPG Industries in Lake Charles has recently closed its library and
donated much of its contents to the McNeese Library. McNEESE LIBRARIANS PARTICIPATE AT LUC Nine McNeese Library faculty were presenters at the Louisiana Users Conference (LUC) held October 9-10, at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge: Rebecca Blakely,
Jerome Marcantel, Breanna Weston: Josh Finnell and
Walt Fontane: Joe McNeill The LUC Conference has been hosted annually by LOUIS: The Louisiana Library Network for the past decade. The NetLibrary 7th shared collection has been purchased by the McNeese Library. About 2,020 titles were added, making for a total of approximately 62,600 NetLibrary "e-books" from all the shared collections (1-7), plus the public domain books also included in the Library's catalog. These latest titles are rich in music-related items, especially opera librettos from such composers as Verdi and Puccini. An author search in the Library catalog, using "Netlibrary" as your search term, will permit you to browse most of these titles. Contact the Reference Department for further details on NetLibrary. NEWSPAPER INDEXES MOVED TO SERIALS
Newspaper indexes have been moved from Reference to the Serials Reading Room (2nd floor) for convenience of patrons/researchers using microfilm readers and printers. Historical newspapers on microfilm include The New York Times, Times-Picayune, and Wall Street Journal.
