HURRICANES GUSTAV & IKE

McNeese State University was closed a total of 4½ class days in response to threats posed by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike.  However, no significant damage was experienced on campus. Unlike after Hurricane Rita, all returned to normal after the university was re-opened following each storm.  The semester schedule has been slightly adjusted to compensate for missed class time.

LIBRARY RECEIVES CONSERVATION BOOKSHELF

Treasured objects and artifacts held by the McNeese Library will be preserved for future generations with help from the IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf, a core set of conservation books, DVDs, and online resources donated by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the primary source of federal funding for the nation's museums and libraries.

The McNeese Library is being awarded this essential set of resources based on an application describing the needs and plans for care of its collections. The application was successfully submitted by Josh Finnell, Reference Librarian.

The IMLS Bookshelf focuses on collections typically found in history or art museums and in libraries' special collections, with an added selection of texts for zoos, aquaria, public gardens, and nature centers.  It addresses such topics as the philosophy and ethics of collecting, collections management and planning, emergency preparedness, and culturally specific conservation needs.

The IMLS Bookshelf is a crucial component of Connecting to Collections: A Call to Action, a conservation initiative that the institute launched in 2006.  IMLS began the initiative in response to a 2005 Heritage Preservation study, which documented the dire state of the nation's collections.  The multi-faceted, multi-year initiative shines a nationwide spotlight on the needs of America's collections, especially those held by smaller institutions.  Such institutions often lack the human and financial resources necessary to adequately care for their collections.

NETLIBRARY COLLECTION EXPANDS

The NetLibrary 7th shared collection has been purchased by the McNeese Library.  About 2,020 titles were added, making for a total of approximately 62,600 NetLibrary "e-books" from all the shared collections (1-7), plus the public domain books also included in the Library's catalog.

These latest titles are rich in music-related items, especially opera librettos from such composers as Verdi and Puccini.

An author search in the Library catalog, using "Netlibrary" as your search term, will permit you to browse most of these titles.  Contact the Reference Department for further details on NetLibrary.
