Historical Sketch

Kappa Kappa Iota, a national sorority for women teachers, is the oldest of its kind in the United States. It was first organized on December 6, 1921 by a group of public school and college teachers at Stillwater, Oklahoma. Its stated purpose is "to promote the advancement of education by providing an effective nework for the exchange of education and teaching practices by educators."

The Louisiana Alpha Conclave of Shreveport was organized on February 4, 1951. Eight months later, the Beta Conclave of New Orleans was formed. By 1954, the total was brought up to five chapters with the addition of Gamma of Houma, Delta of Monroe, and Epsilon of Ruston. These five chapters organized Eta State, bringing Louisiana into the fold of the national organization. There are now over 50 conclaves in the state.

Membership is by invitation only; eligible members include teachers, principals, supervisors, deans, presidents of educational institutions, former teachers, and wives of men who are in any of the above categories. Honorary membership may be extended to outstanding women in the field of education. Scholarships are awarded annually, as well as the Loretta Doerr Achievement Award, presented at Kappa Kappa Iota’s annual state convention.

The sorority has made the virtues of "Faith, Courage, Loyalty, Honor, and Love," their motto. They are active in community service projects such as donating to local women's shelters, and their on-going support of the Denver based Henry Kempe National Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect.
